Human Resources Director – Garden City, NY Office

Position Summary:

Cullen & Dykman LLP is a full-service law firm that has been serving clients since 1850. The position, based in Garden City, reports to the Firm’s Managing Partner and the Executive Director and is the leader of the Human Resources Team. This position is responsible for leading and directing the overall Human Resources activities of the firm, including recruiting and staffing, compliance, staff training and development, payroll, employee relations, coaching and performance management, benefits administration, and workplace safety.  This person will provide leadership in creating a professional environment in each office that is consistent with our commitment to making Cullen and Dykman the best place to work.

Direct reports: Human Resources Manager, Benefits Coordinator, and the Payroll Specialist.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Human Resources department staff.

  • Lead departmental projects and oversee operations and processing, regularly following up on work results and conducting annual employee performance reviews.
  • Communicate topics of importance to team and solicit input and feedback on systems, improvements and job satisfaction via individual conversations and regularly scheduled team meetings.
  • Develop and implement goals and objectives for team.
  • Evaluate performance, conduct annual reviews, and provide necessary training to Human Resources team.

Oversee and manage the functions, duties and responsibilities of the Human Resources Department and Administrative Office Manager groups.

  • Interface with hiring managers, supervisors, and department heads regarding recruiting, hiring decisions, compensation, new hire orientations, performance reviews, employee concerns, performance issues, and/or disciplinary actions.
  • Monitor and track attorney and staff new hire orientation and training.
  • Remain current with the most recent human resources regulations and developments, including any state and federal legal issues relative to human resources.
  • Update and maintain the firm’s Employee Handbook.
  • Administer employee classifications assessments and development of job descriptions.
  • Oversee and administer the firm’s health and safety programs.
  • Review payroll and manage the firm’s health benefits program and 401(k).
  • Assist in legal activities relating to human resources issues, investigations, and employee grievances.
  • Represent the firm in the professional community.
  • Partner with the Benefits Administrator to ensure that all benefit deductions are accurately captured in payroll.

Client Service Excellence

  • Consistently promote and model courteous internal and external client service in a prompt and efficient manner. Maintain positive relationships with attorneys and staff, including outside vendors, through professional honest interaction. Respond to attorney and staff requests quickly and professionally with recognition that the requests serves and internal client or firm need.

Confidentiality

  • Safeguard and keep any information, observations, or viewpoints regarding firm and client business matters confidential.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

  • BA or BS in related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of HR Experience.
  • Course work in HR or certification as PHR or SPHR is highly desirable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in written and verbal form.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of human resources administration, including timekeeping and wage and hour compliance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with senior executives, managers, staff, and employees.
  • Proficient in MS Outlook, ADP, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Able to travel to and from various offices as needed.

Working Conditions and Travel Requirements:

  • This position works in a professional office environment and is required to sit for prolonged periods of time using a computer and telephone.

Collective Bargaining & Labor Arbitration Attorney – Garden City, NY Office

Educational/Experience Requirements

  • JD degree required with excellent academic credentials
  • New York Bar Admission
  • 8+ years of collective bargaining and labor arbitration, a must
  • Employment litigation, a plus
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Strong professional judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to communicate professionally to internal and external clients
  • Proactiveness, resourcefulness, and a strong work ethic
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task required

Tort and Insurance Defense Litigation Attorney – New York, NY Office

Educational/Experience Requirements

  • JD degree required with excellent academic credentials
  • New York Bar Admission; New Jersey Bar Admission, a plus
  • At least 4+ years of relevant tort experience
  • Trial experience is a plus but is not required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Strong professional judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to communicate professionally to internal and external clients
  • Proactiveness, resourcefulness, and a strong work ethic
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task required

Construction Litigation Attorney – New York, NY Office

Educational/Experience Requirements

  • JD degree required with excellent academic credential
  • New York & New Jersey Bar Admission
  • 3+ years’ experience in construction/NYS Labor Law defense and construction defect/property damage practice areas
  • Must have depositions and court experience.
  • Any insurance coverage experience will also be considered
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Strong professional judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to communicate professionally to internal and external clients
  • Proactiveness, resourcefulness, and a strong work ethic

Asbestos Litigation Attorney – New York, NY Office

Educational/Experience Requirements

  • JD degree required with excellent academic credentials
  • New York Bar Admission; New Jersey Bar Admission, a plus
  • 2-4 years’ asbestos litigation experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Strong professional judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to communicate professionally to internal and external clients
  • Proactiveness, resourcefulness, and a strong work ethic
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task required

Environmental Lateral Attorney – Princeton, NJ Office

Educational/Experience Requirements

  • JD degree required with excellent academic credentials
  • New Jersey Bar Admission, New York Admission, a plus
  • 6+ years of experience representing clients on  a wide range of environmental compliance matters.
  • Experience in representing clients before NJDEP, USEPA, the US Army Corps of Engineers and in transactional settings on matters including site remediation and brownfield redevelopment; wetland, coastal and flood hazard permitting; air, water and solid waste permitting and compliance; transactional support and environmental due diligence and related litigation  
  • Book of business preferred but not required 

Estates and Trust Attorney – Hackensack, NJ Office

Educational/Experience Requirements

  • JD degree required with excellent academic credentials
  • New Jersey Bar Admission; New York Bar Admission, a plus
  • 3+ years’ estate administration and estate litigation experience
  • Estate and special needs planning, a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Strong professional judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
