What made you interested in law as a Career?
My interest in law as a career stems from a deep-rooted sense of purpose and identity. Originating from the Igbo tribe in Nigeria, my name, Nnenna, translates to "Grandmother" or "A Father's Mother," but its spiritual connotation means "The Leader." In Igbo culture, women have historically been the heads of their households, embodying strength and leadership. This cultural background has profoundly influenced my aspirations.
Understanding the significance of my name, I felt a strong sense of responsibility to live up to the leadership qualities it embodies, not only for my family but also for myself. This sense of purpose naturally directed me toward a career where I could make a significant impact, advocate for justice, and lead by example. Law, as a profession, aligns perfectly with these aspirations, allowing me to fulfill my namesake's destined path while making a meaningful difference in society.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Outside of work, my favorite thing to do is to experience different cultures. This passion manifests in two main ways: traveling to a different country to immerse myself in various cultures firsthand and exploring them through their cuisine.
What have you enjoyed most about Cullen and Dykman’s program so far?
With it being my second summer here at Cullen and Dykman, I have found value in the comprehensive and supportive environment it provides. The program's commitment to fostering professional growth, efficacy, and development stands out to me. I have appreciated the opportunities for hands-on experience, which have allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge learned in school to real-world scenarios. The mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals within the firm have been invaluable, offering insights and perspectives that have enriched my understanding of the legal field.
I have particularly enjoyed working on a variety of cases and delving into intriguing legal issues. While winning a case is always gratifying, tackling new and evolving challenges without established precedent or case law and finding innovative solutions is especially rewarding. Experiencing such cases during my time here has been incredibly captivating and has highlighted the dynamic and intellectually stimulating nature of legal practice.
What academic/professional achievement are you most proud of?
The academic and professional achievement I am most proud of is twofold: becoming a business owner and getting into law school. This journey was particularly challenging, especially amid the disruptions caused by COVID-19. Both accomplishments required months of dedicated preparation and perseverance. Being the first in my immediate family to get into law school is a significant milestone for me. While these may seem like two distinct achievements, I view them as interconnected. Being a lawyer is, in many ways, like running a business—what you put out into the world in both realms dictates what you receive in return. Seeing where my efforts have brought me still fills me with awe and gratitude.
