50th Anniversary Attorney Spotlight: Leon Sokol
August 25, 2025Leon J. Sokol is a partner in the firm’s Corporate department. He represents national and regional companies with regard to corporate matters as well as real estate development and regulatory issues.
What are some of your largest professional achievements over the past 50 years? I was involved in many seminal cases before the New Jersey Supreme Court defining separation of powers, legislative immunity, and the constitutional right of the Legislature to veto executive branch regulations. I also participated in two landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases related to redistricting. Additionally, I helped form several joint insurance funds under New Jersey law.
How has your role changed at the firm over the years? I began with the founding of Greenstone and Sokol in 1975, which evolved into Sokol Behot, a boutique firm focused on real estate development, banking, corporate counseling, and complex litigation. Sokol Behot joined Cullen and Dykman in 2016.
What has been the most impactful advice you have received about practicing law? The most impactful advice I've received as an adult, which has served me well in the practice of law, is to be the last person to speak at a meeting, not the first.
What advice would you give to new attorneys? The best advice for new attorneys is to obtain experience, if possible, in different areas of the law to determine what interests you most. Also, assess your strengths and weaknesses to determine what you find to be most enjoyable and look forward to doing when you wake up every morning. Do not be concerned about trying new assignments even if they prove to be unenjoyable or unsuccessful. The experience will point you in the right direction.
What activities do you participate in outside of the firm? I play tennis regularly, singles, not doubles, and participate in outdoor activities such as hiking and enjoying nature. I have been involved in many charitable organizations, serving on the boards of the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, Jewish Home, and as Chairman of Nature Israel, which is the American arm of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, Israel's largest NGO and largest environmental organization. I also served as Chairman of the Federation Endowment Fund.
