Webinar Description:
As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to affect the nation, many colleges and universities have taken swift and effective action in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within their campus communities. Students have been instructed to move out of campus housing, classes have transitioned to an online format, and many scheduled events, such as commencements, have been postponed or cancelled.
In response to these measures, several class action lawsuits have been filed by students seeking a refund for tuition, room and board, and/or other fees, essentially arguing that they contracted for services, facilities, and opportunities, such as in-person academic instruction, and that as a consequence of institutional closures, they are no longer receiving what they have paid for.
Please join James G. Ryan, Esq. and Hayley B. Dryer, Esq., partners and members of Cullen and Dykman LLP’s Multidisciplinary Coronavirus Task Force, and Dennis Cariello, Esq., partner and co-chairman of the Education Group at Hogan Marren Babbo & Rose, Ltd, on Wednesday, May 6th at 10:30 am as they provide guidance on these issues as they impact colleges and universities. After an overview of the common claims contained in these class-action lawsuits, the speakers will discuss possible responses to a lawsuit as well as ways that institutions can prepare for possible litigation related to these issues. A Q&A session will follow. Please submit any questions you have in advance of this webinar to Shelly McCallig at smccallig@cicu.org by noon on Tuesday, May 5th.
